WESTOK'S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
The Covid-19 pandemic has dominated our TV screens since the beginning of the year, and has tragically impacted on our lives in many ways. Despite the tremendous impact the pandemic has had, it is widely recognised that the Climate Emergency is the biggest threat we face at present and will continue to be the case long into the future.
At group level, Kloeckner & Co has committed to support efforts to limit the impact of Global Warming by aligning our business to the UN Global Compact “Business Ambition for 1.5⁰C” to help limit Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
In January of this year, Kloeckner & Westok’s ongoing commitment to the Environment and sustainable development was evidenced by our successful achievement of BES 6001 certification for Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products.
Westok are active members of the BCSA – British Constructional Steelwork Association. BCSA is committed to Sustainability, and has in place a Sustainability Charter. The objective of the Charter is to ensure structural steelwork is a sustainable form of construction in terms of economic viability, social progress and environmental responsibility.
Companies are audited across a range of criteria, and Kloeckner Metals UK | Westok is to be awarded “Gold Level” status as all twelve criteria for this prestigious status have been achieved on foot of our BES 6001 certification.
Structural Engineers must always ensure the structures we design are safe and durable, but this must be undertaken in the context of the Climate Emergency and the need to ensure building product specifications reduce the harm to the Environment.
Lightweight Westok cellular beams offer significant environmental benefits with the continuous string of cells in the web providing a lightweight clear-span section, with minimal waste during manufacture. This facilitates efficient mechanical and electrical service distribution and considerable in-built future flexibility.
Westok Advisory Engineers are engaging with designers on a daily basis regarding lightweight efficient sustainable designs, and material sourcing. We are already calculating the initial carbon content and end of life carbon impact of our designs. Lightweight Westok beams can offer the lowest carbon content of any steel beam flooring system. This facilitates longer spans/grids without weight/carbon penalty.
Kloeckner Westok will continue to take a strong lead on this topic and we currently offer CPDs on Sustainability and efficient design using CLT, metal deck, precast concrete and timber floors. An upcoming blog will look at grid-options and Embodied Carbon savings in more detail.
