With Nexigen®, Klöckner & Co offers transparent, low-carbon materials, operations and logistics solutions that help our customers establish sustainable value chains. Nexigen® enables our partners to demonstrate their progress in the area of sustainability and helps accelerate their green transformation.

Up to now, there has been no generally accepted definition of green steel. The term is frequently used as a catch-all for steel produced using a low-carbon process. Further details on our transparent classification of green steel can be found here

We already offer Nexigen® products in all six categories, although steel production using green hydrogen is currently still in the pilot phase. Commercial production is expected to start in 2024/25. It will take time to ramp up production volumes. This will require a) established steel producers to adapt their production processes, or b) new market players (such as H2 Green Steel) that work with new technologies to achieve industrial-scale production.

Nexigen® products in all six categories are already available in industrial quantities. In addition, thanks to major partnerships, from 2025 we will be the first distributor with the capacity to deliver more than 250,000 tons of hydrogen-produced green steel.

Based on international, science-based standards, we have developed a metric for categorising low-carbon and green steel according to the certified emissions generated along the entire value chain (from resource extraction to production). By classifying products into six categories based on this Nexigen® classification, we have created an easy way to reliably assess and compare the carbon footprint of green steel.

We aim to support our customers in three ways:

1. We help them better understand the changes on the steel market and the implications for their businesses.
2. We ensure transparency by documenting the emissions generated in production and throughout the entire supply chain of our steel products.
3. Our long-standing partnerships enable us to secure reliable volumes of hard-to-obtain green steel and other low-carbon steel products, even during periods of shortages.

The carbon savings generated by green steel depend on the basis of comparison. Compared with an average ton of flat steel from the smelting furnace, green steel can reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by up to 95%. Emissions are reduced by 45% if low-carbon steel is produced in the electric arc furnace and by around 75% if only scrap is processed.

We do not have a minimum order quantity. However, the total market volume and the quantities we can obtain will not be sufficient to meet the demand for green steel and other low-carbon steel products. The sooner you approach us, the better your chances of early access and larger quantities.

Green steel and other low-carbon steel products will likely be available on the spot market in the future. It will be a few years until this is the case for green steel, since production is only just ramping up and planned volumes are currently being purchased in advance. In both cases, customers will initially find it difficult to obtain the desired products.

We work with our suppliers to ensure that the emission intensity of our Nexigen® steel products is transparent. We check the data that we receive and then pass it on to our customers. We disclose the emissions generated during the full product life cycle.
