How you know our steel is truly green

The term “green steel” has been thrown around in our industry for a while now. But taking a closer look quickly reveals that there is no universal definition for green steel. Currently, the term is used to describe steel that is produced in a strongly CO2-reduced manner. A similar situation can be observed with certificates and labels. Several producers are starting to have their steel certified as “green”. 

However, these certifications vary widely so that it becomes difficult for customers to compare. We have eliminated that problem by developing a universal definition that is based on customer requirements, steelmaker perspectives, steel production technology routes and the GHG Protocol as the leading carbon accounting standard. At the same time, we are convinced that apart from the full elimination of CO2 emissions already substantial reduction adds value along the way of the green transformation. Therefore, our categorisation includes several CO2 reduction levels.

How our categorisation works

We have developed a categorisation for CO2-reduced and green steel so that customers can directly see the carbon footprint of their purchased product.

Our categorization for CO2-reduced products includes five categories based on their true physical carbon footprint from raw material to production: They range from START (with a physical footprint from 1,750 to 1,400 kg CO2 per metric ton) to PRIME (400 to 0 kg CO2 per metric ton). “Balanced Steel” is a separate category for “re-balanced” green steel. This means that for different steel categories originating from the same production facility, manufacturers may use a calculated “re-balanced” carbon footprint resulting from the overall volume of emissions generated in the entire facility.

    Our calculation methodology follows the internationally renowned GHG Protocol.
  • Emissions from raw material to production
    Emissions include production (Scope 1), purchased power (Scope 2) & supply chain (Scope 3 Upstream).
  • No offsetting included in CO2 load categorization
    The physical production emissions determine the product’s categorization; CO2-offsetting is not included.
  

We lead the way, which is why we have set an ambitious target: By 2025, over 30% of the products offered will come from the two most sustainable categories (PRO and PRIME).

With our strict Nexigen® categories, we ensure that the term "green steel" is only used for products with the lowest possible emissions (PRIME category). The other categories make it easier for customers to distinguish between CO2-reduced products. In return, customers are able to improve their own carbon footprint. 

The CO2 content as well as the production method of a steel product define how we categorise it. We are confident that our categories will accelerate the shift towards more sustainable production methods in our industry by increasing the demand for CO2-reduced and green products. The customers benefit from the increased supply of green steel.

The categories and defined limits give customers a quick, transparent picture of the carbon emissions generated in the production of the product they would like to buy. This makes it easier for customers to compare the footprint of different products. 

We consider all emissions that have occurred in Scope 1 to Scope 3 – Upstream. For the very first time, customers will receive detailed information about the product's footprint across the entire value chain.

AVOIDANCE OF GREENWASHING

Our Nexigen® categorisation includes the product’s true physical footprint from raw material to production. In addition, our calculation methods and strict limits for each category are based on scientific evidence and thus prevent product greenwashing. Thanks to that, the emission data we provide is meaningful.

More background information on the scopes

Scope 1 includes all emissions that are directly caused by the company. Examples for a steel producer are:

- Emissions at own steel manufacturing plants
- Emissions from own company vehicles

In Scope 2, emissions that result from the consumption of purchased energy are recorded. This includes:

- Emissions from purchased electricity
- Emissions from district heating and cooling for own use

In Scope 3 – Upstream, emissions that occur even before the company's own entrepreneurial activity are recorded. Examples for a steel producer are:

- Purchased goods like raw materials (e.g. coke and iron) and other services
- Production of fixed assets
- Transport of purchased goods to the steel producer's facilities

Scope 3 Downstream comprises emissions that occur after the company's own entrepreneurial activities. Examples for a steel producer are:

- Processing of the sold steel products
- Use of the sold steel products
- Transport of the steel products to distributors like Klöckner & Co
