2018 Structural Steel Design Awards & Westok’s participation in shortlisted projects

Kloeckner Westok were engaged by Elland Steelwork Structures to provide specialist design guidance on the floor plate solution on the first of two office tower structures at 101 Embankment.  Working closely with the Manchester office of Ramboll Consulting Engineers, Kloeckner Westok devised an economical clear-span layout on this BREEAM Excellent development.

The challenge

101 Embankment is the ultimate clear-span office, without one solitary internal column. All secondary beams span from building perimeter directly to the core, with the exception of the secondary beams in the four corners of the structure. These are carried from perimeter to core by Westok Cellular Plate Beams. The secondary beams, with free pre-cambering, were designed with a continuous string of 400mm diameter cells for ultimate MEP integration potential.

By maximising the composite metal deck span and reducing the overall quantum of secondary beams per floor, the piece-count was minimised. The optimised design provided the delicate balance between the need to produce an ultra-economic individual steel beam design and a sensible degree of beam type repetition, on a floor where every secondary beam is marginally longer or shorter than its adjacent partner due to the tapering footprint of the building perimeter.

The basement car park provided a further layer of complexity to the design of the towers. The core could not continue down through the podium deck from which towers 100 & 101 spring. Ramboll devised a steel framed transfer level, with short span / heavily loaded Westok Plate Beams generating the requisite grid-change at the critical transfer level.

Greengates 101 is perhaps the definitive Westok clear span office: offering the correct technical and commercial mix of optimised Westok Cellular and Plated Beams. No other specialist structural steelwork fabricator operating in Britain or Ireland can provide this solution.

The strikingly beautiful office structure has rightly been shortlisted for award at the upcoming Structural Steelwork Design Awards. The second tower also comprising Westok cellular beams throughout, has just commenced on site by BAM Construction, and come 2020 will join its sister tower in completing the development.

Built as an extension of the iconic Waterfront Hall building in Belfast, the new exhibition and conference centre involved a three storey 4,000sqm extension, providing extensive exhibition space, banqueting facilities, multi-functional rooms, offices and a meeting suite.

The challenge

Kloeckner Westok’s design involvement dates back to October 2014, when Belfast Structural Engineers Doran Consulting approached Westok to provide specialist design direction and support on the project.

Westok’s Technical Advisory Engineers provided free design guidance, and calculations on the tapered 23.6m clear span rafters over the extension. The architectural drivers required a sharply tapering rafter, from 1570mm at the deeper end to only 784mm at the shallow end. At the request of structural steelwork fabricator Walter Watson Ltd, the clear span rafters were manufactured and supplied in one piece, to facilitate the speedy erection of these members on the tight waterside site.

At first floor level, a cantilever-backspan Westok arrangement was designed to facilitate a column free perimeter. These heavily loaded 1200mm Westok transfer beams boast 700mm diameter cells to facilitate the integration of large MEP services within the depth of the beam. Kloeckner Westok worked closely with Walter Watson to programme the manufacture of these critical Westok sections.

We are delighted to see the Waterfront Hall Extension shortlisted for the Structural Steelwork Design Awards. Kloeckner Westok’s involvement in Belfast spans a variety of sectors including Sports & Leisure, Car Parks and Office Structures. So next time you visit this wonderful city, you just might spot Westoks in these Belfast landmark buildings: The Kingspan Stadium; City Quays Offices and Car Park; Titanic Belfast.

If you think Westok’s expertise could help with your next project simply get in touch here. Who knows this time next year your structure might be up for the award.
