7 ways that Kloeckner Metals UK supports Road Safety

Road safety is paramount at Kloeckner Metals UK, so we’re pleased to share that this week is Road Safety Week! Running from 19th to 25th November 2018, Road Safety Week is the UK’s biggest road safety event, organised by the road safety charity Brake. It aims to raise awareness and share important, lifesaving messages with schools, organisations and communities.

At Kloeckner Metals UK, we support road safety within our own organisation, and we are integral to the development of products that are fundamental to improving the safety of road users throughout the country.

Here’s how…

  1. Monitoring Road Safety

We strive to constantly improve road safety for our drivers across the country and are delighted to have been awarded for our achievements! Kloeckner Metals’ Group Transport Manager explains the approach we take:

It is with great importance that our vehicles are driven in a safe manner. All vehicles are fitted with a black box engine management system that monitors speed, distance, over-revving and harsh braking

  1. Silver FORS Award

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is a voluntary scheme that allows fleet operators to raise the level of quality within their fleet operations.

We are incredibly proud to have maintained accreditation for 5 years, a mark of our dedication to safety and driver awareness. Having recently been awarded Silver, we are now excited to announce we’re striving to achieve Gold by the end of 2019.

Additionally, all our London LGV drivers have completed a FORs approved ‘Safe Urban Driving Course’ that allowed them to understand the perspective of other road users by participating as a cyclist.

  1. Left Turn Warning Alarm

All our London vehicles have been fitted with a device to warn cyclists, pedestrians and other road users of a pending left turn. This alarm emits a repetitive “caution vehicle turning left” message below speeds of 20mph.

We intend to roll this safety feature out to all vehicles by 2020, in order to help protect all road users.

  1. In-Vehicle Camera

As well as a left turn warning alarm, all vehicles are also fitted with an in- vehicle camera. This allows us to capture road and driver view video footage, something which is essential when investigating incidents on the road.

We use this technology to promote safer driving and respond to incidents. What’s more, the cameras in our vehicles are linked to our Telematics system, reporting back when harsh breaking is used.

  1. Michelin Tyres

We recognise the importance of having quality tyres on all our vehicles, and that’s why we always use Michelin tyres to help maintain road safety.

Michelin tyres maximise grip and are proven to have shorter stopping distance in all weathers, allowing us to protect our drivers as well as other road users come rain or shine.

  1. ROSCO Safe Driver Award

The ROSCO Safe Driver Award is an opportunity to recognise excellence and encourage road safety amongst UK operators and their drivers. When drivers stay free from accidents and road traffic convictions over 12 months, they are eligible for this award.

We are proud that in 2017 alone, 75% of our drivers achieved the ROSCO Safe Driver Award, a real recognition of our dedication to making roads safer.

  1. How Kloeckner Metals UK Products Support Road Safety

Our passion for safety is also demonstrated through our role in supplying product that support passive safety. We are exclusive supplier of Frangible Safety Posts – passive posts which have been designed to collapse in a safe, controlled and predictable manner.

Our supplier FSP Ltd. has been developing and perfecting the technology behind Frangible Safety Posts to reduce the fatal consequences of impacts with roadside furniture, benefiting road users and helping to save lives.

“I saw passive safety as such a fascinating area and one for enormous growth because it fills a gap in road safety. You can make a car as safe as you possibly can but if a vehicle comes off the road and hits a rigid object, there’s going to be a risk of death or serious injury. There had to be a way to mitigate that risk.”

FSP Managing Director Craig Pyser
