Paul with club members
We spoke to Paul to understand how he became a volunteer coach for Aston Swallownest J.F.C’s Frame Football, a team for children and young people with disabilities.
Read on below…
Paul, how did you come to coach Frame Football?
I never envisaged myself becoming a football coach. I asked to help out with some Frame Football sessions at Aston Swallownest by my cousin, during a time in my life when I was going through a rough patch. Helping out gave me something positive to do that helped others. I soon became a regular fixture at Aston Swallownest on Monday nights with the Frame team, and after earning level 1 football coaching badge, I was given the opportunity to coach an able-bodied side. I ended up turning down the offer down to carry on coaching Aston Swallownest’s Frame Football team.
What difference do you believe the team makes to its members?
The team was originally built three years ago for those who use frames as a means of getting around every day, including many players who suffer from cerebral palsy. I’ve been volunteering since the very beginning. Today, the Frame Football team had become a welcoming space for young people ranging from as young as 4 to 19 years old.
They suffer from various conditions but had one key similarity: a love of football. Frame football is so important to the kids because it gives them the chance to play football on their own terms. You think you’ve had bad days, but these kids always have a smile on their face.

How important is this cause to you?
That hour on a Monday night is so rewarding for me. It has been one of the best experiences of my life and has given me a lot of perspective, changing my view of disability. Frame Football benefits the other teams in the club as well – some of the players from other teams even give up their time and help out every Monday night.
Kloeckner Metals UK were lucky enough to be announced as the winners of Aston Swallownest J.F.C.’s raffle to determine who would be the club’s sponsor for the next two years. Kloeckner is proud to support and sponsor all 17 teams which make up Aston Swallownest J.F.C., including their Frame Football team, and look forward to seeing our company’s name emblazoned on the shirts of all those who wear the Aston Swallownest colours.
