Automated processing of Westok beams to support economic connection detailing

Introduction

Kloeckner Westok is the unrivalled market leading supplier of cellular beam products and services for the European steelwork market. No other specialist steelwork fabricator operating in Europe offers such a diverse range of products and services, such as free CPD seminars and free analysis, design and BIM software, complementing the manufacture and fabrication of clear-span cellular, plated and shallow floor and roof beams.

Kloeckner Westok’s unique ‘FICEP Endeavour’ Saw and Drill line has been operational since January 2018, greatly  enhancing our service offering to steelwork fabricators. The Saw and Drill line has been designed to suit the needs of our customers, who have traditionally faced issues with the processing of Westok beams, particularly cambered and asymmetric Westoks.

The machine is an important step forward in Westok’s Value Added Service (VAS) and we are fully committed to providing the customer with continued investment and innovation.

Unique Features

The Saw and Drill line has been enhanced with unique features. The enhancements include an additional set of rollers which are used to support the narrower flange when processing asymmetric beams. The machine has also been modified to cater for cambers.

For the first time in Europe, the automated sawing, drilling, milling, notching and scribing of cambered and asymmetric cellular beams is available.

Kloeckner Westok processing increases our customer flexibility and capacity, whilst reducing the fabrication programme and costs through fabrication efficiency.

In order to maximise these benefits, the end connections can be detailed to adopt connection styles which exploit the features of the automated Saw and Drill line and minimise welded attachments.

Connection Guidance to Maximise Automated FICEP Endeavour Throughput

The image below is representative of a typical floor-plate employing clear span Westok secondary and primary beams.

The most efficient floor plates are based on the long-span secondary principle, i.e. the floor beams are set out such that the longer spanning secondary beam carries the floor slab, and the shorter spanning primary beam frames between the columns.

The end connections can be economically detailed to utilise automated processing and to reduce the hours required in the factory.

Primary Westok Cellular Beam End Connection Styles

Maximise automated processing:

  • Primary beam: Cut to length and drilled for Fin Plate or Double Angle Cleats
  • Column flange: Welded Fin Plate

This end connection detail can be used to eliminate the need for end ½ infills.

Alternative:

  • Primary beam: Cut to length for welded End Plate
  • Column flange: Drilled for End Plate

This end connection detail can be used to eliminate the need for end ½ infills also.

Secondary Westok Cellular Beam End Connection Styles – Option 1

Maximise automated processing:

  • Secondary beam: Cut to length, notched and drilled
  • Primary beam: Welded Fin Plate

Alternative:

  • Secondary beam: Cut to length and notched, for welded End Plate
  • Primary beam: Drilled for End Plate

Secondary Westok Cellular Beam End Connection Styles – Option 2

Maximise automated processing:

  • Secondary beam: Cut to length and drilled
  • Primary beam: Welded Extended Fin Plate

This end connection detail can be used to eliminate the need for end ½ infills. The notched Option 1 may require a ½ end infill depending on the notch dimensions.

Key benefits to connection style selection:

  • Remove welded attachments from secondary and primary beams. Adopt connections suited to cut-to-length and drilling
  • Minimise welded attachments to reduce shop hours
  • Westok beams can be delivered to our customers to suit their requirements:

–  Over-long requiring full-fabrication in the shop

– Partially processed by Westok, i.e. cut-to-length and drilled only

– Fully fabricated

– Fabricated, painted and delivered to site
