An interview with Emma Porter: Kloeckner Metals UK’s Creative Designer

At Kloeckner, we understand the importance of having a strong brand presence, whether we’re at a trade show, on social media or on the road.  Emma Porter is our Creative Designer based at the Leeds HQ, with a degree in graphic design, she is a driving force behind the Kloeckner brand look and feel, taking responsibility for several of our marketing materials.

We spoke to Emma about her role, recent trip to the Berlin head office and her ambitions for the future of Kloeckner Metals UK. Take a look below…

  1. What are your key responsibilities as Creative Designer at Kloeckner?

During my two years at Kloeckner Metals UK, I have worked on a great range of projects – no day is the same and depending on company activity, my jobs can be very varied.

I work on lots of different marketing materials such as brochures, flyers, infographics, exhibition stands and online banners, making complex and specialist messaging engaging through design and typography. I also use a mixture of software including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign to create these materials.

  1. What have your favourite projects been so far?

I really enjoy working on banners for exhibition and show stands and digital banners for the online shop. These types of artwork really allow me to use my creativity and imagination, having more room to present new ideas.

When working on exhibition stands, you must use your imagination to visualise how the artwork will look on such a big scale and it’s a brilliant feeling to unwrap the final product and to see the impact it makes during a trade show. Recent banners I’ve created include those for the CV Show and rail and sign industry events.

  1. Which upcoming projects are you particularly looking forward to?

I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into some of the digital artwork we have coming up. Creating designs for digital really allows me to branch out and get creative without being trapped by rules and regulations. Plus, the more experience I gain in this area, the more I will develop my skills and expertise in digital design.

  1. You’ve recently completed a Level 3 Diploma in Creative and Digital Media, what did the course cover?

Kloeckner gave me the opportunity to further enhance my skills in digital design using the Apprenticeship Levy Scheme. I was given a day release to attend college where I had access to great facilities and industry professionals. I received lots of support here at Kloeckner especially when work needed to be submitted and when I needed time to complete the work. The course covered a lot of bases which was a helpful refresh on what I’d learnt during my university degree too.

The Level 3 diploma gave me a better understanding of some new design programmes and allowed me to trial them. I also gained experience in animated videos which is something I’d like to use here at Kloeckner this year.

  1. You’ve recently worked on creating new infographics for the online shop, how do you plan to develop this type of artwork moving forward?

I’d love to use what I learnt on my recent course, developing the online shop infographics by using animation. I’m also looking forward to supporting our social media team by working with them to create assets for sharing on our platforms. With animations and video becoming the most engaged form of social content, it’s important we stay ahead of trends and lead the industry.

  1. Tell us about your recent trip to Berlin!

In October last year, I spent one week at the Berlin office. It was a brilliant trip and great to meet the team of designers based over there. We collaborated on new designs for the company, made plans for how we could creatively work together moving forward to share ideas and inspiration and created new templates for online shop banners and newsletters.

With the headquarters based in the heart of the city, it was great to be able to explore Berlin too and visit the main attractions. I look forward to continuing to work with the design team there and hope to visit again soon!
