Westok provides solutions for new Leeds Beckett University Building

Located in the middle of the University’s Headingley Campus, this state of the art building will be a home to students and academics from the Carnegie School of Sport. The aim is to co-locate the University’s specialist teaching and research laboratories with general teaching facilities for use by the wider university and local community. A key objective for the new facilities is to attract and retain the best students and staff.

The new £45M CTaR (Carnegie Teaching and Research) Building will include research laboratories, hypoxic laboratory, changing and recovery facilities, teaching space and a community café at ground floor level.

On the first floor, meeting rooms, offices, IT suites, teaching spaces and a balcony area for spectators to view the outdoor athletics track will be created.

The second floor will feature a new 60-metre indoor athletics track together with additional teaching facilities. A rooftop walking track will also be provided.

Kloeckner Westok’s Technical Advisory Engineers worked closely on the scheme with the Leeds office of Curtins Consulting. As well as the providing technical guidance, initial scheme solutions and detailed design calculations, Westok facilitated a multi-disciplinary design workshop at our facility in Leeds with Curtins Consulting and Architect Sheppard Robson. The team also undertook a factory tour to witness the manufacture of Westok beams at first hand.

The structural solution features 375t of clear span Westok cellular beams, typically with 600 diameter cells to facilitate MEP service integration. Many of the Westoks are pre-cambered to eliminate issues with dead load deflection.
