30T Westok Cellular Beams
Kloeckner Metals UK Westok rafters are frequently adopted in the Leisure sector to facilitate the required clear-spans, and the latest such facility to adopt this design approach is Tarka Leisure Centre in the town of Barnstaple.
The new Tarka Leisure Centre is strategically positioned, linking to the existing steel framed Tarka Tennis Centre, to provide a comprehensive new sport and leisure offering. The centre will include: an internal skiing area; 25m eight-lane main pool with spectator seating, 8.5m x 20m-long four-lane learner pool (both pools having moveable floors); a four-court sports hall; 120-station fitness suite and two exercise studios.
Westok value engineered rafters were adopted for both the 20.5m clear-span sports hall and 23.8m clear-span swimming pool roofs. Westok beams are readily pre-cambered, and the rafters were sent to site with an appropriate camber to mitigate issues with respect to dead load deflection.
Clear-span Westok rafters greatly benefit from the efficient ribbon-cut process, creating a cellular beam which is significantly lighter than a traditional UBs, with a knock-on embodied carbon benefit. Typically the clear-span Westok is more economical to manufacture and fabricate than a deep truss also.
Westok designed and manufactured 30T of clear-span rafters on the project, for customer Adstone Construction who provided the imagery.
Thanks also to structural engineers on the project, Hydrock and main contractor Speller Metcalfe Ltd.
