York Community Stadium is a York City Council led scheme to deliver a new 8,000 seat capacity stadium for York City FC and York City Knights Rugby League FC and associated community sports and leisure facilities. Construction is now well underway and the stadium is due to open during the third quarter of 2019.

Westok are very proud to have been involved in the design and fabrication of the four stands and the leisure building working with Caunton Engineering.


The original structural scheme proposed plain Universal Beams to form the roof to each of the four new stands.

Caunton Engineering Ltd turned to Kloeckner Westok’s free design service to investigate a value engineering solution adopting the tried and tested solution of tapered Westok cantilever rafters. Kloeckner Westok tapers have been adopted in over 70 stadia right across Britain and Ireland. Caunton Engineering Ltd were keen to explore cost saving solutions which met with the aesthetic drivers set by the Architect. In particular, the tip of each cantilever was set to a minimum for each of the 4no. Stands.

Westok tapered Cellular Beams offered significant advantages over Universal Beams in terms of aesthetics, steel weight and overall cost for the main rafters to the stands.

Following provision of a scheme design solution, Kloeckner Westok Engineer Martin Baugh provided a full suite of calculations for the complex cantilever / back span arrangement required to provide the clear sightlines demanded by the Architect.

Martin commented, “The design process involved working closely with the designers to ensure the global actions from their 3D model and the calculations for each individual Westok member aligned correctly. As with any value engineer process, we also rationalised the designs to ensure there was a sensible number of different Westok beam types”.

The first stand commenced on site was the three-storey Main East Stand which is to accommodate hospitality guests, players, officials and the media, and will be connected to the adjacent retail and community.

The East Stand cantilevers 19.35m with the Westok rafter 1300mm deep at the support tapering down to a depth of only 525mm at the tip of the cantilever. Overall each rafter to the Main Stand is nearly 42m long and each one was delivered to site in three sections.
