King’s Cross is home to 67 acres of inspiring businesses, outstanding architecture, destination restaurants and a vibrant cultural scene. It is London’s creative neighbourhood and a lively place in central London to visit day and night. The area’s industrial past has inspired the 50 new and re purposed buildings; the public spaces between them are a mix of parks, streets, squares, and gardens, with Granary Square and its iconic fountains as a heart.

Kloeckner Westok has an impressive track record of providing economic clear span design solutions to Commercial/Office developments in London, and we are pleased to continue our work in the Capital with the large scale Grade A office scheme: S1 Handyside.

WESTOK SOLUTIONS

S1 comprises 11 floors of flexible open-plan office space, and continues a trend of the use of exposed Westok cellular beams in commercial developments in major UK and Irish cities. The structure delivers some 190,000 square feet of space and boasts a landscaped roof terrace.

Following a request by the successful steelwork fabricator Elland Steel Structures to assist with the design process, Kloeckner Westok engaged with Main Contractor BAM. The outcome of an intensive design collaboration on the part of Westok and Ramboll UK was the successful design of 1400t of Westok Plate Beams (WPBs) across the structure.

The most common grid arrangement comprises 12m secondary beams spanning onto 9m primary beams.  An innovative architectural element of the design is a cantilevering section of floor between levels 7 and 10.

Westok designers prepared WPB designs over 220 individual beams, comprising both simply supported and moment resisting restraint conditions, and varying in weight from 50 kg/m to over 600 kg/m.  We worked closely with Ramboll UK engineers to ensure these designs met their critical M&E servicing requirements.  An efficient review process was put in place to ensure design approval was achieved within a very tight programme.

If you think Westok could help you on your next project, we’d love to hear from you.
